I am Liesbeth Damen. Born and raised in the Netherlands. As a child I already had the desire to ‘make children in Africa better’. I studied medicine in Antwerp and then specialized as a pediatrician in Brussels which led me to move to Belgium in 2014. After my pediatrician specialization, I worked for about 2 years in pediatric hemato-oncology where I took care of children with various types of cancer and also supervised the whole family. After that, I took a course in tropical medicine at the Tropical Institute in Antwerp (post-graduate). The question was born, how I could be of service in God's Kingdom with my life. The Lord led the way to the Mbuma Mission Hospital in Zimbabwe. A hospital that not only has an eye for the medical needs of patients, but also for their spiritual needs. Many people are still caught up in idolatry: a kind of half-hearted Christianity combined with worship of their ancestors. As a doctor in this hospital, you work together with the whole team to provide good care for patients, but you also carry the Christian identity together. You may point patients to the Lord Jesus, the Only Healer in Heaven, for healing of their sins. This is ultimately much greater and necessary than healing of the body. It is therefore valuable for the team at the hospital, together with patients who are there, to begin the day with prayer, singing psalms and reading a passage from the Bible. In this way, we are able to do the daily work from the Source and, wherever the opportunity arises, to refer to that Source.
